Hello. This is a fyi for those that might be wondering what we’re up to this weekend. We won’t be cycling the roads of Renfrew County. Instead, we’ll be cycling the RLCT to Kingston, and back to Ottawa. Accordingly, there will be no local group ride until June 18. Stay tuned for details.

The Wild Mountain Thyme

O the summer time has come
And the trees are sweetly bloomin’
And the wild mountain thyme
Grows around the bloomin’ heather
Will ye go
lassie
go?

Chorus:
And we’ll all go together
To pull wild mountain thyme
All around the bloomin’ heather
Will ye go
lassie
go?

I will build my love a bower (summerhouse)
By yon cool crystal fountain
And round it I will pile
All the wild flowers o’ the mountain
Will ye go
lassie
go?

And we’ll all go together
To pull wild mountain thyme
All around the bloomin’ heather
Will ye go
lassie
go?

I will range through the wilds
And the deep glen sae dreamy
And return wi’ their spoils
Tae the bower o’ my dearie
Will ye go
lassie
go?

And we’ll all go together
To pull wild mountain thyme
All around the bloomin’ heather
Will ye go
lassie
go?

If my true love she’ll not come
Then I’ll surely find another
To pull wild mountain thyme
All around the bloomin’ heather
Will ye go
lassie
go?        Francis McPeake

Primed and Ready for RLCT

Nov 28/15: 0 Kms; 0 Hrs; 0 Metres; 0 Riders

Well hello. It’s been awhile since we last had a conversation. I’ve been off the roads of Renfrew County for two months. The effects of this can be seen already in thighs and quads now with less muscle and more flab; in my heavy breathing and laboured steps, in a trouser belt that sits increasingly uncomfortable around my waist. My hair is thinning, too. And, I think too often on my passing youth and I fear the advance of age. When shaving, I see many signs of my ‘best before due date’. I ignore them, of course. Who wouldn’t deny the inevitable decline and the daily reminders of decay. And, so, I ride on for as long as I can, when a more sensible person would say enough, “Let it go.”

Okay, so that was all a big dollop of malarkey, especially the bit about my hair. Who am I kidding. I’ve been thin for years. And, yes, the signs of an aged body are all there. Don’t laugh. Your time will come. Enjoy and revel in the day while you can. I do – distorted as it is by myopic vision and strident denial of the passage of time. Cognitive dissonance is a wonderful thing. It affords one the illusion of awareness without the compulsion to resolve the dissonance. Sometimes, that’s for the best. Rage rage and all … .

So what – let’s ride.

Here is a tentative schedule for 2016 for your consideration:

I’ve penciled in some dates and distances and some routes . This is  subject to change based upon rider comments and weather. What follows is much the same as we’ve done in past years, except with a greater emphasis on hills. The weekend mileage presumes you’re riding two or three times during the week.

As for April, it is always a difficult and unpredictable month. The cold and rain may interrupt our training schedule but come May we ride regardless of the weather. As a rule we don’t ride in the rain in April but we do ride in the rain in May. Fun, isn’t it.

Here is the tentative RLCT training schedule for  2015:

  • April weekend rides (Sat & Sun) will be in the 50 – 75 km range/day weather permitting.
  • April 30/May 01: 175 km weekend, includes either Quyon or Kanata or both
  • May 07/08: 200 km weekend, includes either Quyon or Kanata or both
  • May 14/15: 235 km weekend, includes Mtn Chute via Pucker St (MEC 100 km ride May 15?)
  • May 21/22: 230 km weekend, includes Hopetown – Calabogie
  • May 28/29: 270 km weekend, includes Pembroke
  • May 30/31: 200 km weekend tbd
  • June 04/05: 150 km weekend tbd
  • June 11/12: 350 km weekend RLCT – http://www.ottawabicycleclub.ca/rlct
  • Other events for 2016 include the MEC and Tour de Bonnechere rides in August

Okay hello, almost time to start-up the blog for another year of great cycling. Hope you are pumped for it. I am, after a winter of feeling ”soft in the middle”. Been a tough one. No question. Next year, I’m going to find a detour around X-mas eating. Is that possible? Is that desirable? What’s a life without some excess – controlled excess.

Okay, I will be incommunicado until April 15, more or less. Just wanted to give you a heads-up on the proposed training schedule for the RLCT. Some of the lads will be on the road in late March/early April. Weekend rides then will be hit and miss. Best to make some phone calls to see who is doing what. I will post again April 15, most likely.

Meantime, here is the tentative schedule:

– May 03/04 200 km weekend (includes ride to Quyon)

– May 10/11 200 km weekend (Pucker St  and Mountain Chute)

– May 17/18 240 km weekend (includes Almonte, Hopetown, Calabogie)

– May 24/25 270 km weekend (includes Pembroke and Quyon)

– May 31/01 200 km weekend (Kanata)

– June 07/08 RLCT 360 km weekend; don’t know about the RLCT, contact me.

Mark your calendar now. Schedule is weather dependent, of course. No specific schedule for April. But, we will ride in April. I will provide a formal ride notification for April 19 & 20, and onwards.

Okay, bye bye. AC

October 19/13

Withdrawal symptoms already, how about you? The R5 is ready for a new season and a mid-winter tour to Cuba and a Spring trip to Mallorca: New chain, two new tubulars, new headset bearings, BBright BB fixed, frame cleaned and polished. Looking good, actually very good. Who knows, we may even get a surprise November weekend ride, if the weather tempts us. Be ready.

Now, how do I begin the story at hand. Here it is, our training schedule for the RLCT:

May 03/04 200 km weekend (includes ride to Quyon)

May 10/11 200 km weekend (Pucker St  and Mountain Chute)

May 17/18 240 km weekend (includes Almonte, Hopetown, Calabogie)

May 24/25 270 km weekend (includes Pembroke and Quyon)

May 31/01 200 km weekend (Kanata)

June 07/08 RLCT 360 km weekend; don’t know about the RLCT, contact me.

Mark your calendar now. Schedule is weather dependent, of course. No specific schedule for April, since it is always hit and miss. You could go with me to Mallorca, however.

Don’t neglect your fitness this winter. Some of the lads are already on the trainers; some others are still riding. Regardless, you must be fit to ride (in good form) for April 01.

Stay fit, firm, fine—always. Ciao. AC. Comments welcome at arnpriorcycling@bell.net; http://www.twitter.com/ArnpriorCycling

Too much fun! Gonna do this in 2014.

Too much fun! Gonna do this in 2014.

Okay, this may be a bit early, what with the latest fall of snow telling us that winter is not about leave anytime soon. Still, I thought the mere mention of some tentative dates might cheer you up and give impetus to your indoor training. Here is how I see the ride schedule:

March 30-31, April 06-07, 13-14, 20-21, 27-28—50/75 to 100 km rides each day;

May 04-05 Quyon 105 km/ Haley Station 100 km
May 11-12 Pucker St hills/ Pinnacle Rd Hill
May 18-19 Middleville Circuit 140 km/ Pucker St hills
May 25-26 Pembroke 170 km/ Quyon 105 km
June 01-02 anybody’s guess
June 08-09 RLCT

All subject to change and weather dependent.
Mixed in here will also be rides to Mountain Chute 120 Kms (Hills), other hill repeats, rides to Carleton Place and Kanata 100 kms, etc all to be determined.

Just a note for the April training rides, these are hit and miss because of the uncertainty of good weather. Regardless, be ready to ride 50-75 Kms right off the bat.

April rides will probably start at 10 am or earlier, if possible.
May rides will begin at 8 am.

Specifics (time, date, venue) for Saturday rides will be posted by Friday (the day before the ride); for Sunday rides, specifics will be posted on Saturdays.

Now aren’t you just pumped! hc
