Hello –

Well, it had to come. It’s September 1st on Saturday. We’ve been cycling since April. That’s five months, with four of these in perfect conditions, by which I mean warm and dry. How has your summer cycling season been? Have you reached a significant kilometre milestone? Are you ahead of last year? Or, have you had personal issues (work, bicycle, family, pain, illness) that have reduced your cycling time. The impediments are many. That’s why it’s a good idea to seize the day when opportunity permits. Don’t hesitate. There are still two months, well, at least one good month left of cycling. Then what?

Winter! yes, it’s coming. Did you feel that north wind with its glacial breath on Thursday morning? Brr!

I mention it now to alert you to pre-season xcountry sales. Don’t miss a chance to get geared up for winter activity. For me, it’s skate-skiing. I was re-drawn to this by CAM, thinking I could be first up the climbs by transferring my cycling fitness to the skis. Didn’t happen. I was left in the ‘dust’ so to speak. Yes, you need to be fit but also you need balance and proper transfer of power from one ski to the other and good glide and wax technique. Takes a while to master everything but worth the effort. You’ll love it.

It’s not cheap, though. Skis, poles, boots, jacket, tights, wax, etc will set you back $500+ for a basic kit. Mid-level would be $1000, with really nice kit from $2000. It’s a bit like cycling – the more you spend, the lighter the gear. Basically, you get what you pay for but beyond a certain point you’re paying more for less. Be that as it may, you won’t replicate the whole-body cardio fitness gained from SS. It’s fantastic, especially in the Gatineau. You’ll ski up the same hills you cycle (the Doldrums, the FP Corkscew, Blacks, Penguin, the Lookout). You’ll come to appreciate these in a new way. No kidding.

Season passes are $108 to $172 if purchased before November 01.

Okay, here’s the tentative plan for Saturday, September 01:

  1. Stinsons at 7:30 am start for a route and distance to be determined by those present.
  2. Gatineau at 7 am start for three loops 94 kms, 1600 metres. Please email arnpriorcycling@bell.net to confirm attendance.

NB: There will be no Blog entry on Saturday afternoon. Here’s the tentative plan for Sunday, September 02:

Stinsons at 7:30 am start on Sunday for a route and distance to be determined by those present.

Ask yourself, where else would you rather be when the alarm rings on weekend mornings than on your bicycle pedalling away the fatty bits? You know you’ll just want to be there.
