September 18/16: 83 Kms; 2 Hrs 42; 694 Metres; Eight Riders

Hello to summer. Who would have thought mid September would bring such delight? What a beautiful morning for a high energy effort over the hills to White Lake and Renfrew. Sure, there was a flat and a tear in the tyre to boot but that wasn’t enough to detract from the prospects of what we expected to be a great ride. There’s nothing like a rise in the road to quell the conversation and raise the heart rate. And, there’s nothing like the deep rhythmic breathing that comes from a steady pace when under load, and knowing one’s cadence is perfectly suited to the demand, and having the power to hold it. That was just us on the long incline to White lake and on the rollers over to Burnstown and then to Renfrew: harmony, balance, and beauty revealed in all its individual, disparate glory. Yes, you just should have been there!

What will next weekend hold for us. You’ll just want to be there.

“What is more cheerful, now, in the fall of the year, than an open-wood-fire? Do you hear those little chirps and twitters coming out of that piece of apple-wood? Those are the ghosts of the robins and blue-birds that sang upon the bough when it was in blossom last Spring. In Summer whole flocks of them come fluttering about the fruit-trees under the window: so I have singing birds all the year round.” Thomas Aldrich
