September 05/16: 40 Kms; 1 Hr 25; 201 Metres; Nine Riders

Well, that was a relaxed ride in near perfect conditions. The countryside is delightful with newly mowed crops lying fresh in the fields, horse-high corn, yellowing soy, crisp – painterly air, punctuated with pungent barn yard smells. It was a welcome, down-pace ride after two hard days in the saddle. We’re not talking Cat 4 hard or anything close to a categorised ride. We don’t/can’t play in that arena. Still, it required a considerable effort. That’s why Monday’s ride was so pleasurable – little effort but maximum enjoyment. It was notably for its short distance and early coffee stop. We could do worse than to choose a ride like this from time to time. If you missed it, you really just should have been there.

As for this coming Saturday, the tentative plan is to cycle down Pucker St – out and back, most likely, for a total distance of 103 kilometres. That’s a teaser, of course. It all depends upon the wind direction. Just the same, you’ll want to have your low gears in good ‘nick’. Stay tuned.

As for this blog, the last post of this season will be Oct 01/02.

It will not always be like this,
The air windless, a few last
Leaves adding their decoration
To the trees’ shoulders, braiding the cuffs
Of the boughs with gold; a bird preening

In the lawn’s mirror. Having looked up
From the day’s chores, pause a minute,
Let the mind take its photograph
Of the bright scene, something to wear
Against the heart in the long cold.    R S Thomas
