July 30/16: 108 Kms; 3 Hrs 30; 639 Metres; Ten Riders

Awesome 3 – another great ride on a well-loved circuit to Kanata with lots of smooth pavement and not unfriendly winds. Mind you, Mark potholed and was rewarded with (not one, but) two punctures. And, for good measure, when the first flat was fixed it popped. So, that made three tyre changes. Mark is now giving lessons. His number is … .

Okay, all this delay turbo-charged Mark, who promptly took the lead (with Joe) on the sixth line and pounded out a quick tempo to burn off the frustration. Eventually, Mark and Joe gave way to Keith and Rob and Raymond and a fast charging Tim as they bolted for a two kilometres run towards March Valley Rd. You just should have been there. But, this was only the first half of a superb morning of riding. Both Keith and Blair showed their steel on Diamondview; and, Blair tapped out a spirited cadence on Loggers Way. Not to be missed. Wow!

Here’s the tentative plan for Sunday, assuming winds are from the east:

Meet at Stinsons at 7:30 am 7:30 am and ride hills – some more than once. Okay, listen up. We’ll ride to Pine Grove and the lower River Road to do three (full) hill repeats of Gilles Hill; then, we’ll ride to Sand Point and ride one hill repeat of Toner Rd; then we’re off down Golf Course Rd to Mclean and Stewartville for two repeats of the big hill; then, we’re off to Creekside and Mclaughlin and Mcleod and the main road to White Lake and up to the Waba Rd and down to Campbell Side Rd for one hill repeat and then it’s off to Pakenham at a leisurely pace for coffee on the front steps of the General Store; home via Dwyer Hill, etc for a total distance of approx 85 kms+-. Elevation gain unknown.

NOTE the Venue and Time: Stinsons on White Lake Rd 7:30 am, sharp departure.

Temperature will be in the mid twenties; wind east at 15. Who wouldn’t want to ride in that?

As for the ride, this won’t be everyone’s cup of tea. Still, I’m expecting a big turnout. Really! We’ve got distance and hurt combined. The objective is to strengthen the legs and to test the lungs on the climbs but to ride moderately otherwise. That’s the saving grace. But, we can add ‘repeats’ as necessary to build intensity. Take note – once you’ve completed your repeat pull over and wait until everyone is ready for the next leg of the journey. As usual, it’s steady as she goes, with minimal delays on the road. Bring gels, bars, water, electrolytes, etc. Liquids will be a key element tomorrow. The coffee stop is at kilometre 63 approx.

Alert: Important information: These are ‘no-drop’ group rides. It’s steady as she goes (conversational style), except for the hills where it’s every man for himself. Regroup at the top. Honest effort required by all. New cyclists welcome.
