May 29/16: 99.5 Kms; 3 Hrs 15; 602 Metres; Fourteen Riders

Wow! Let me say that again. Wow! Wasn’t that a blast, albeit in hot, humid conditions. The ride improved with every kilometre, not the least of which was meeting up with JA and GG in Pakenham. Our numbers continue to increase. I mean, what does it say about the route planning, the ride, and group dynamics when two guys cycle 50 kms from Kanata to join us. I know it was probably the prospect of coffee with Alice that enticed them but still there they were fresh as daisies at Stinsons ready for the fray. Yes, the boys are in fine form and require a steady hand when they bolt. Fortunately, Eric, that master of pedalling consistency, knows how to keep the pace just so. Well, almost; he himself took flight on county road 5. Yes, you just should have been there for the no-holds barred run from Alice’s to the Thomas Dolan Parkway.  As for Stonecrest, I’ve run out of superlatives for that stretch of road. Perfecto!

Kudos to everyone for keeping it together on another tough morning in the heat. We have certainly experienced it all this spring – cold miserable conditions for too many weeks; and, now, extreme heat and humidity. The weather is bonkers, no question.

Now, let me mention preparations for the RLCT. If you’re thinking of changing tyres, this is the week. If you haven’t already bought your gels, energy bars, protein powder, etc., this is the week. If you haven’t already gone over your bicycle thoroughly, this is the week. If you haven’t already given your ‘kit’ for the RLCT a once over, this is the week. Believe me, you don’t want to leave these things until the week of the 6th. Do it now. Here endeth the lesson.

Okay, the tentative plan for next weekend is to ride 150 – 200 kms in final prep. Your plan for this week should be to load up on kms or do hill repeats. In short, if you’re short of mileage or you just want to top up, do it this week because the following week is totally for recovery. That’s how I see it anyway.

That’s it.
