Let me begin with an alert: 7 am 7 am 7 am Start Old Orchard Lane

Okay, it’s time for our annual ride to Pembroke. We’ve been doing this for several years now. It’s a key part of our training regimen for the RLCT. It’s long ride and it always holds the promise of a leisurely brunch at Irving’s. Heck, that’s why some of the guys saddle-up.

This year we’ll face unpleasant temperatures. It will be 23C to start rising to 32C by the time we get back to Arnprior. Also, we’ll have a tailwind on the outward leg and a headwind on the return. We usually prefer it the other way around. Oh well, things could be much worse.

The early start is a pain but under the circumstances it’s worth the effort to get up and on the road. You’ll thank me later. If, however, many of you would prefer a later start let me know; otherwise, it’s 7 am.

Regarding the route, this is KO’s ride. It will be much the same as last year. For those with time constraints, there are various escape routes to get home earlier than the rest of us; such as, at the top of Story Land hill, at Haley’s Station, and in Cobden.

I think EC will be choosing one of these alternatives. So, if you can’t do the full monty, there’s lots of choice.

Okay, here’s the tentative plan for Saturday (subject to the ride-boss’ approval):

Meet at Old Orchard Lane at 7am 7am (SHARP) and ride to Pembroke (Keith’s Route) via River Road to the Four Corners, then up to Haley’s Station, Magensium Line, past Bully’s Acres and onward to Cobden and eventually to the Truck Stop in Pembroke; home via Beachburg, etc. Total distance 170 Kms. Lots of climbing. Steady as she goes, especially on the outward leg. Brunch at Irving’s Truck Stop after about 90 – 100 kms. May I take your order. Will that be B&E or Pancakes. Large serving please.

NOTE the Venue and Time. Old Orchard Lane and 7 am 7 am, sharp departure.

The plan is to keep moving, with minimal delays on the road. Bring gels, bars, water, electrolytes, etc. Liquids will be a key element tomorrow.

Temperatures will be 19C – 31 C; wind north-east at 10; changing to SE. Who wouldn’t want to ride in that?

Alert: Important information: These are ‘no-drop’ group rides. It’s steady as she goes (conversational style), except for the hills where it’s every man for himself. Regroup at the top. Honest effort required by all.
