August 09/15: 80 Kms; 2 Hrs 34; 400 metres; Eight Riders.

Okay, the good times continue. Is there really any other theme for those of us lucky enough to have the free time and the inclination to ride a bicycle? Pinch yourself and think how fortune smiles on the few. There are many for whom there is no idle time from the ‘getting and spending’ to fill the larder. Education and hard work are often insufficient to overcome chance and circumstance. Fate is fickle. What is up can be down. Resilience is all; as is adaptation and drive. Faith is both found and lost and regained for good or evil. What is your touchstone?

So, the yeas have it. There were no naysayers on the road to Carp this morning. The air was warm, the breeze light, and the mood ebullient among the riders. We knew this would be a most enjoyable, effortless cycle to coffee, and back. And so it was, albeit there were a couple of high-spirited sections on Cnty Rd Five and Thomas Dolan that had us dig deep – but only briefly. And, once, we turned down Stonecrest, the dappled canopied light, the gentle curves and undulations had us under its spell. Again, on Cnty Rd Five, with Keith at the helm and aided by a following wind and some favourable rollers, we pedalled at pace without effort towards Fitzroy. It was a dream cycle. You know, you really just should have been there.

Kudos go to Espresso Joe (aka Joe Fresh) for his pluck and unflagging spirit. He’s a natural front-runner, now learning to modulate the pace with the changing terrain.

Well, there you have it: two solid days on the bike. The TdB is next Sunday and the MEC ride the Sunday following. This Saturday, we will only ride 50 kms or so. Keep your legs fresh for the 16th! Fingers crossed for good weather and favourable winds.
