July 26/15: 82 KMs; 2.36 Hrs; 471 Metres; Seven Riders.

Well hello. The good rides just keep coming these days. We had another one on Sunday to wash away the strains and stresses of the past week, leaving us fresh and unfettered (albeit briefly) by the demands of work-day clock. You just can’t beat a hard cycle to take your mind off everything but the turning of the pedals. High spirits are rarely found in the high-rise or in high-finance. You need to leave the cloister and commerce behind to be fully un-contained. That was the rule of the day when two young lads (Sam and Brandon) joined us this morning. I eventually sent them off with Perry and Joe for a few extra kilometres before we all met up again at Tim’s for coffee.

“So, Brandon, that’s a nice bike. It’s a Trek. What’s the groupo?” Brandon replies, What’s a groupo.” Priceless – without needing to know; sufficient enough just to ride and to enjoy. Simple and beautiful. The energy of youth is contagious. It’s like basil vinaigrette adding the necessary punch to the green plate. You just should have been there.

Okay, I know, this post is late but that’s consistent with my place in the pace-line, too. Last, but not least, I suppose. Well, that’s how I see it, for this past weekend’s rides when I had to saddle-up the old HB bicycle. I used to ride that bike and think nothing of it; but all I can do now when I’m riding it is think about the bike I’m not riding. Yes, it is easy to become dissatisfied.  As that old saying goes, ‘comparisons are odious’. Still, it is hard to go back to an old bicycle when one is used to riding ‘the right article,’ just like kicking with flippers is not the same as kicking with bare feet when swimming across a stretch of open water. One can still do it but not easily. Who said it is not the tools but the workman. I don’t even think Froomey could have won the TdF with my old HB bicycle.

Hope you are having a great week. Stay tuned for news on Friday about Saturday’s rides.
