Well hello. I hope this finds you in good form, and fully alive!

I ask myself, does life get better than this: coffee and porridge first thing, then a leisurely read of the paper and a quick scan of the Globe and Mail on-line, then a cycle to the Neat (for more coffee) followed by a PVR review of the morning’s TdF, interspersed with periodic clicking of the remote to catch the latest Pan Am Games action. Wow. Pinch me. How was your week?

Well, if you haven’t already heard about Simon Geschke’s win on Stage 17, it is worth noting. Not because it was spectacular or dramatic in and of itself. No – not at all. It was simply a beautiful moment because it was not only well deserved but also as unpredicted as unexpected. Here was a journeyman of fifteen years with hardly a win to his name. Merely a soldier in the trenches, a domestique – not even a super domestique – an everyman, so to speak. He doesn’t know it but he gives hope and he inspires the weekend wannabes, who have won nothing and who were never quite good enough but who give it their all, living in a delightfully foolish state of denial. It was a memorable bit of television to see his emotion spill into living rooms everywhere. Athleticism and success after long travail is inspiring.

Here’s the tentative plan for Saturday:

Meet at Stinsons at 8 am 8 am and ride to Carleton Place via Almonte and Appleton; home via Conc 8 and Hwy 29, Pakenham, Waba Rd, Conc 10, etc., for a total distance of 100+ Kms. Take note that the route from Arnprior to CP will be via Dwyer Hill and Panmure, Blakeney, Almonte.

Just a reminder, it’s steady as she goes. These are ‘no-drop’ group rides. Solo interval riding is for the week days. Weather 20 C+, with winds SE at 10. Some humidity and a chance of rain around 1 pm.

It’s holiday time so some of the lads are out-of-town; others are riding the Grand Fondo in Ottawa. Not sure who is about. Hope to see you.
