Well, hello to what should be another super weekend for cycling the roads of Renfrew County. Come on out while you can still ride sans arm-warmers and toe-covers. It’s great now but it won’t last. How long – who knows. In  fact, it’s raining as I write this and not cheery at all. But, that will change, I hope. Lots of cloud for Saturday and no rain, assuming this weather system moves through as scheduled.

Here’s something from the ‘Net’ about group riding. It’s a good refresher from Canadian Cycling Magazine. Check it out:

http://cyclingmagazine.ca/sections/news/six-tips-for-riding-better-in-a-group-take-your-packs-performance-to-a-higher-level/

“Maintain a manageable pace – Half wheeling is a perennial trap for cyclists riding side by side. The speed of the bunch will gradually ratchet up as each of the leading riders matches the pace of the other. Eventually, everyone is suffering at an unsustainable tempo. Agree on a pace beforehand and stick to it. . . slow down on uphills and don’t accelerate as you come through to the front.

Be predictable – Erratic riding leads to accidents. Throwing your bike backwards as you stand on the pedals, braking harshly and other unpredictable movements can easily cause crashes.”

Okay, here’s the tentative plan for Saturday:

Meet at Stinsons at 8 am 8 am and ride to Renfrew via White Lake, Burnstown, Calabogie, Norton and Whelan Rds to # 132 to the Bonnechere Cafe for coffee after 68 kms; home via Hall St., Whitten, Gillan, Lochwinnow, etc for a total distance of 99 kms. This is an interesting route and a bit of a reversal of our normal circuit. It will require a steady pace, with few stops. So, bring along some gels/bars to keep you topped up. We want to keep on the move as much as possible. I just know you’ll like it!

Just a reminder, it’s steady as she goes. These are ‘no-drop’ group rides. Solo interval riding is for the week days. Weather 20 C+, with winds SW & W at 10.

It’s holiday time so some of the lads are out-of-town. Not sure who is about. Hope to see you.
