July 01: 56.3 kms; B17 1 Hr 56; 349 Metres; 1906 Calories. Jeff, Mark, Rob, Angelo.

Okay, no takers this morning for a meander, just the usual folk, so we ditched the plan to ease up. So, off we rode down White Lake Road to the base of the mountain. There is nothing like a good climb to test the resolve. This was all good. Unfortunately, when we arrived at the Neat for coffee, the cool temperature and overcast sky darkened the vibe and with it our usual easy expansiveness. Also,  Angelo was having trouble with his back wheel. It had developed a severe wobble on the back road to Burnstown. It was now jammed against the bike frame, causing him to have to call home for a lift. But, at least, he knew why those last few kilometres on McLeod Road were so hard pedalling. All in all, we decided to cut the route short, which suited Rob, who had a date with a hammer (back deck); so for the last twenty-two kilometres the hammer was down, so to speak, with Rob (alone) at the front until Jeff joined him on Flat Rapids at Mill Ridge. Now, there were two, and twice the acceleration, with Mark and I tucked in behind out of the wind. Very nice. You just should have been there. And, you can next weekend. Stay tuned. Meantime, I’m off to Manitoulin for a few days.

ps: just a thought for Peter (and family), whose dog, Daisy, died this morning aged thirteen. It is a hard thing and another knock in ”an imperfect world of joy and sorrow”. RIP–Daisy. ”For men in general judge more by the eye than the hand, all can see but few can feel.” Niccolo’ Machiavelli
